Legal Aid is now restricted to individuals who are a victim of domestic violence. Other than that, irrespective of your financial position, you will not be able to receive Legal Aid to cover the costs of divorce proceedings, the financial aspects of separation/divorce and most matters concerning children.

To help people manage their legal affairs in a more effective way after the changes came into effect we have developed a new, more flexible service for clients, with the ability to Pay as you Go.
If you are on a budget, but still want the assurance of expert legal advice, then Powells Pay As You Go gives you the opportunity to pay for advice, but save money by doing an element of the leg work yourself. This way you can protect your interests with effective legal representation to achieve the best outcome, in the most manageable and affordable way.
We deal with all issues arising from breakdown of relationships .We can manage every aspect of your case, representing you throughout, or if you use Powells Pay As You Go, you pay for your advice as you go along, and only for elements that cannot do yourself to the required standard. There are no unexpected charges – what you use is what you pay for on the day at the appropriate hourly rate.
The first step is our fixed fee appointment, which is provided at £250.00 including VAT. This is to help us understand your situation and to help you get some idea of the proceedings. Remember, it’s no obligation beyond this initial meeting, so if you want to think about things or wait until you are ready then you can do that.
If you choose the Powells Pay As You Go service, we will give you clear advice at each stage of the case, to help you achieve what you want. We will be helping you with each step in pursuing your case.
To help you save costs you can manage the administrative elements of the case, including:-
- You act ’in person’ – you are the first point of contact and the one in control of your case.
- The contact address that you give is your own address so all communication about your case goes direct to you.
- Managing all the relevant correspondence and paperwork.
If necessary we draft documents for you. If we have to draft any documents that is not part of a meeting there will be separate charges, and we will let you know what any likely charges will be before drafting anything.
If you apply to the Court you will have to budget for Court fees. You may be entitled to Court Fee Remission and we can advise you about how you apply for this. Powells Pay As You Go does not include representation at Court but we can represent you, if you wish, for a fixed fee.
If you need more support at any time during the process, you can simply and easily change to the full representation service at any time – and keep the same solicitor.
